After work on a Friday evening, I drove south to Waterton Lakes National Park, determined to experience the changing light from sunset through to the following morning.

The hour before sunset was spent photographing the vibrant wildflowers around the Buffalo Paddock. Even while concentrating on those compositions, one eye remained fixed on the western sky.

Then everything changed.

As every landscape photographer learns, the light doesn't gradually become spectacular. It happens all at once.

Leaving my tripod behind, I quickly detached the camera and turned toward the glowing sky. The composition came instinctively rather than deliberately. Sky and water. Above and below. Colour and reflection.

I thought I'd rushed the first frame and assumed I'd missed the moment. I carefully composed several more images, only to discover later that the very first photograph—the one taken almost entirely on instinct—was the strongest of them all.

Behind the Lens

Landscape photography often rewards planning.

Sometimes it rewards instinct.

Looking back, I smile at how quickly everything unfolded. One moment I was completely absorbed in photographing wildflowers. The next I was turning with camera in hand, trying to catch a sky that seemed to change colour by the second.

My composition was almost binary in its simplicity. Sky and pond. Light above. Reflection below.

I didn't overthink it.

Sometimes your eye sees the photograph before your mind has time to explain why.

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0728/2914/1190/files/25a87317-c4f1-4d57-97ed-2f2283edef90.webp?v=1788389280
