Some places feel as though they belong in another world.

This cave, carved over countless years by the rushing waters of the Kicking Horse River in Yoho National Park, is one of them. During summer, the spot where I stood would be completely underwater as the river continues its relentless work of sculpting the canyon walls. Winter briefly changes everything.

As the river freezes over, the cave becomes accessible, revealing a frozen waterfall surrounded by towering walls of ice and rock. Water still races unseen beneath the frozen surface, reminding you that this landscape is very much alive despite its silent appearance.

The moment I saw this scene, I knew it belonged in black and white. Removing colour allowed the textures, light and natural architecture of the cave to become the true subject. The result feels less like a frozen waterfall and more like stepping into a cathedral built entirely by nature.

Behind the Lens

This photograph is every bit as much about imagination as it is about photography.

Standing inside the cave, I couldn't stop looking upward. Shafts of light filtered through openings in the rock while the frozen waterfall stood before me like an altar. The walls seemed to rise around me with the grandeur of an ancient cathedral.

The composition itself came together quite naturally. The real creative decision wasn't where to place the camera—it was recognising that colour wasn't adding anything to the story.

Black and white became the language this photograph wanted to speak.
