Headline
As daylight faded over Emerald Lake, the quiet of a winter evening settled across the Rockies.
Short Description
Captured during the blue hour at Emerald Lake, Winter's Peace celebrates the gentle beauty of a Canadian winter evening. Soft pastel tones, fresh snow and still water combine to create an image that invites the viewer to pause, breathe and simply enjoy the moment.
Extended Description
I had planned to finish the day at Emerald Lake, knowing that the blue hour often reveals a quieter side of this iconic location. As daylight faded, the lodge lights began to glow against the snow while the surrounding mountains slowly disappeared into the evening sky.
Rather than chasing dramatic contrast, I found myself drawn to the softer colours that surrounded me. The gentle blues, warm lights and calm reflections captured the atmosphere I was experiencing far better than a darker, more dramatic interpretation ever could.
Winter's Peace is less about the landscape itself and more about the feeling of standing in complete stillness as another winter's day comes to a close.
Behind the Lens
Sometimes the best photograph isn't the first one you take.
My camera remained on its tripod while I simply stood and watched the scene evolve. I experimented with several interpretations—from images with deep contrast that embraced the coming night to others that reflected exactly what my eyes were seeing.
As the blue hour settled in, I realised neither extreme captured why I'd made the journey. What stayed with me wasn't the drama; it was the peace.
This final image became my favourite because it reflects the feeling I experienced that evening—a quiet moment at Emerald Lake when the world seemed to slow down.
